Answer by  MattK (1713)

Metamucil is a fiber agent that provides a large amount of bulk to hold liquid and allow for easier passage of fecal material. Excessive use of the medicine can cause a slight decrease in the amount of material absorbed, since the surface area is decreased, as well as the time of passage.
