Most DSL modems use between 6-9 Watts, which is between 4-6 Kilowatt Hours per month. To calculate your actual power usage, look for Amps and Voltage on your modem's power supply, and multiply them. This is the wattage per hour. Multiply Watts per Hour by 24 Hours and 30 Days, and this is your estimated kWh per month.

The amount of electricity DSL uses is relative. It uses no more electricity than your dial-up modem or even a cable modem. If you are worried about electricity use, unplug your DSL modem when it is not in use.

DSL is an internet connection that is provided most times by a phone company. DSL will utilize a phone jack in the wall and the signal will travel over a phone line, the only electrical drain with DSL is plugging in the DSL modem power cord which consumes a minimal amount of power, a few cents a day.

The short answer is no, DSL does not use a lot of electricity at all. The energy comes from the standard phone line and the voltage does not exceed that of a regular battery.
