You only need a visa when you are planning on staying in a country for an extended period of time. If you want to just travel to India and you have booked a round trip ticket, all you will need is you passport and proper ID.

To visit India you do need to have a visa and a passport. There are certain areas of India that are restricted or listed as protected and you would have to indicate which area of India you are traveling to when applying for a visa. Then you will be granted to visit the specified region only.
