I've seen ferrets used, yes, but the most common familiar for witches and warlocks is cats and wolves.

Historically speaking, there have been instances of people accused of witchcraft using ferrets as 'poppets' or familiars - basically small animals to act as the witches servant. Other animals commonly thought to be in league with supernatural powers from the Middle Ages to the 17th century were owls, dogs and rabbits - cats being the most popular.
