No. Over-protective parents don't cause suicidal thoughts. Involved parents actually decrease the odds of someone committing suicide. If someone has said they are thinking of suicide, get help.

There is a huge difference between involved parents and overprotective parents. An involved parent is loving, supportive and allows freedom, whereas an overprotective parent attempts to have full control over every aspect of their child's life.  add a comment

I think suicide is all too common with overprotective parents and without overprotective parents. All kids go through a difficult time growing up and some have better coping skills than other kids. I do not thing that being overprotective would be a reason why kids contemplate suicide. It happens for a lot of reasons.

I think that parents who are overprotective tend to care and this tells the teen that they are loved. Teens that think about suicide tend to feel alone.

Sure I think a percent of teens would consider suicide but some parents have a good reason to keep rules strict.

Yes. I am in my 20s and my parents are so overprotective that they treat me like a seven years old. Because of them I had given up on friends, fashion, social activites, celebrations, and now Im thinking of suicide in hope I can reincarnate and be a normal person

Personally it does. I know their reasons for raising me the way they do is out of love, but it makes me resent them for depriving me of things that I should experience as a young adult.

SOME Overprotective parents... their way of parenting can rob the children's childhood, or the possible enjoyment. I lost 15 years of my life being locked with textbooks. I'm 16 (in college & still locked up). Soon I'll be working. I once wanted to die because I feel like missing-everything-in-my-life...a-routine-of-being-born-then-go-to-school-then-go-to-college-then-work-then-die-and-all-fun-was-missed.
