Grasshoppers make noises that are easily heard. They rub their hind femurs against their abdomen or forewings(stridulation). A few will also snap their wings while flying(crepitation). They do this to try to attract a mate.

There are many locusts (they belong to the same family as grasshoppers) who are not musical, however most grasshoppers are definitely musical. Remember the story of the ant and the grasshopper, where all the grasshopper would do was play his music? There is an element of truth there.
