As long as the water heater is intact and there are no holes in it you should be OK. Make sure that there are no leaks. There are several businesses that specialize in servicing water heaters. You might want to have it checked out.

Usually, no. But if the dents are really large, it will effect the internal parts of the heater which may cause some issues. The large dents that occured on heater may disturb the internal components placed inside of it. Because of this it may cause few issues with the performance.
