Did they really dig trenches in WW1?

Or was that movie lore?

Fighting over the entire Western Front in France, Germany, Switzerland and elsewhere was fought with trench warfare. This method of fighting lengthened the duration of the war, and many soldiers died, not from battle wounds, but from diseases and infections due to rats, lice, and otherwise unsanitary living conditions in the trenches.

Yes. There were trenches along the French and German borders. World War 1 saw the first use of chemical weapons because trenches were so effective at preventing infantry fighting. The only way to kill the enemy in the trenches was to gas them, because bullets couldn't reach them and artillery was only partially effective.
