As long as he was in the batting rotation, it counts as a game. If a player gets a chance to move up and take a swing with the bat and sit on the bench for the rest of the game, then they played

He had to be in the batting rotation for it to be considered a game. The first game he was "out", he sat on the bench, but was still there.
