The liver does not regenerate. Once the cells have been tortured by alcohol, they finally harden and become non-functional. There are other diseases that causes liver failure, and in some of those cases liver transplantation is a possible option.

We used to think this was not possible. Now we realize that your whole body is constantly replacing damage, and that you are actually a whole new person every 7 years. Good diet and health habits may very well help your liver regenerate and improve your health.

Depending on the severity of damage, the liver is capable of recovering. First the liver becomes fatty, which is reversible with abstinence. With continued alcohol abuse, the liver undergoes permanent damage from which it cannot recover.

The answer to this is still elusive. Even though the liver can regenerate itself, alcohol abuse seems to do so much damage that the liver cannot make up for it.
