An interesting explorer to research is Sir Ernest Shackleton and his ill-fated expedition to Antarctica. He sailed to Antarctica on a ship called the Endurance which got caught in the ice in 1915. After surviving for about three months, he realized that the only way to survive would be to row to South America to get help.

Ferdinand Magellan was a famous Portuguese explorer in the early 16th century. He is known as the first explorer to circumnavigate the globe. However, on this voyage Magellan died in a battle in the Philippines and another man took over as captain for the rest of the circumnavigation.
