We had a large willow tree in our backyard and I had no clue how to work with it! We ended up planting tulip bulbs and mulching, then surrounding the base with a low border. Then, we put a few chairs and small table there. It's a little oasis now!

A tree that is large would be great with a swing or even a tree house located in one of the low branches.

Dig around the tree about 2 to 3 feet in a circle. Plant water tolerate plants around the tree. Try a mixture of annuals and perennials. This will give you an idea of what works best. Put mulch around the plants about 2 inches. The tree will soak up any water and you might have to water more often.
