Most American financial institutions will cash Canadian money orders but it is not instant. It will take several weeks as they have to send the money order to a clearing house. The fees could be between $20-50 depending on the institution. Almost all Canadian banks as well as CanadaPost do issue U.S. currency money orders for only a small fee.

You may find it difficult to cash a Canadian money order. If you have a bank account you'll be able to cash the check as long as you have the equal amount of money to back the money order. You can also cash a money order at the RBC Centura Bank, which is a branch of the Canadian Royal Bank.

You need to go to a bank that buys and sells foreign currency. They will cash your Canadian money order, convert the proceeds into US, and charge you a commission plus transaction fee. Typical charge is 10%. Travelex is a money exchange company found at many airports. Chase Bank also makes a market in foreign money.
