Can I Claim House Cleaning on my Taxes?

House cleaning, in and of itself, is not a reasonable itemized deduction. There may be rare cases in which it can be claimed in conjunction with a deductible expense, but then the burden is on you to prove that the deduction is a legitimate one.

If you are talking about your personal residence then, no you cannot claim a deduction for cleaning. However, if you rent the house out and pay to have it cleaned, then that would be a deductable expense.

That is not entirely true. The portion of your home used exclusively for business can be professionally cleaned, and the expenses used to do so can be deducted. That's just one example you failed to include.  add a comment

If you are cleaning your own home, the answer is generally no. If, however, you are paying to clean a rental or commercial property, it is a deductible business expense. If you have to have your home cleaned after a disaster, that may be deductible, as well.

No. Not unless you have a home office, in which case you could probably claim the cleaning costs of the office. Be advised that the IRS looks very closely at home office deductions, and the deduction would be so low that it probably would not be worth it.

You might be able to claim it if you use your residence as a business. You should check with your tax preparer. There's certain criteria your home business has to meet before you can claim it.

If you can prove that a portion of your house is used for business, than the expenses of maintaining that area would also be deductibel. If you have a house cleaner you would have to allocate their charge by the square footage of that area to the total.
