German Shephards have a long and thick coat. Grooming and trimming the coat a few times a year keeps the dog cooler and cleaner. And they look so cute trimmed!

While this is incorrect in the breed standard, in both AKC and FCI, some German Shepherds do have long coats. Some people like this look. Long coats do show up as a fault in normal litters of shepherd pups as it is a recessive gene that only shows up when a pup gets the gene from each of its parents.
