Are those U-shaped airplane pillows effective?

I have seen some people use them, and they seem like they might work ok, but do they really?

Yes they work very well especially on long flight in coach. As they will keep your head stationary and keep your neck from turning and crimping your neck and waking you up. These types of airplane pillows look a bit nerdy but do work very well especially on long international flights.

I don't find them effective. I believe the purpose of the pillow is to keep your head from 'rolling' while you sleep, however, I used one for the first time a couple of weeks ago on a flight, and did not find it to serve that purpose.

Afew people seem to be OK with them, but you may need to snatch two or three from your seatmates, or just ask the attendant for more than one.

Airline pillows are effective as a headrest but I wouldn't use one because they are not sanitized or changed between flights. Since many people may use the same pillow germs, stains, bodily fluids and even parasites can be transferred from person to person. In today's world, protection yourself from unnecessary contact is essential to good health.

I think the question-asker is referring to those pillows that you purchase yourself. The type that wraps around your neck, not the ones that airlines provide for the passengers. I didn't realize that the airline-supplied ones are not cleaned... if true, thats pretty gross!  add a comment
