Futons can be put to use as both chairs and beds. You can unfold the back so that it is flat and you will have a bed at night. If you need it to be a sofa just prop the back up again and you can use it for a sofa.

A futon is an eastern version of a sofa bed. They can be used as a chair or sofa-type seating and they can be folded out to be used as a bed. The cushion is usually folded under in the chair position and then flattened to be a mattress-type cushion.
