Whether the boxes and accessories are worth buying is up to you, but the idea of a simple meal in a container is a great one.

They are not a necessity but they add a fun look to your lunch. You can use tupperware and create your own tiny compartments with small condiment containers.

It depends if you make meals that are easily stored and served in them. And what function you need. Pretty or able to keep food at proper temp all day?

The Bento box is designed to be loaded by a loving Japanese wife with carefully prepared Japanese morsels, showing her devotion to her dear husband. If you want to send your family off to work/school with japanese style food, they are a good idea. Otherwise, use a sandwich box.

Yes, if you really want to get into the preparation of those Japanese specialities to fill up the spaces and make an attractive cold meal for someone. I find it too much hassle. I have to cook other dishes to fill the box, and I feel like I'm eating leftovers.

Unless you get into Japanese cooking, and make up your packed meal the japanese way, Bento boxes are just an elaborate and expensive way to carry your cold food to work. You can get much better value from plastic food boxes, especially if they can go in a microwave oven. They work OK for foods you usually eat.

Bento Boxes and accessories provide a charming way to store and organize food. They are especially worth buying from Asian grocers, who tend to offer the best prices.
