Beagles are wonderful. I have brother and sister beagle mixes, and they're sweet and gentle with my little nieces. Just make sure you have a fenced yard or time to take them for regular walks because they need a lot of exercise.
They are good dogs if you want a pet that is active, smart, and fairly useful; they can, however, be noisy, and they expect quite a bit of attention and activity.
