According to the plate tectonics theory how many major plates are there on the earth?

In 1912 the plate tectonics theory was developed, I need to understand the basics of the theory.

There are 7 primary plates, each makes up the bulk of the worlds continents, they are the African Plate, Antarctic Plate, Eurasian Plate, Indo-Australian Plate, North American Plate, Pacific Plate, and South American Plate. There are also 7 secondary, smaller plates. These are typically shown on maps with the primary plates.

There are seven or eight major plates and several minor plates. The earths crust slides on the molten core, the continental plates drift somewhat freely around and are the cause of a lot of natural phenomenon like mountain-forming and earthquakes due to activity at plate boundaries like subduction or sliding edge to edge
